Hey everyone! The Kombucha brewing class will be on Thursday August 20th at 7PM. Location is TBD in SF — likely in the Avenues. It’ll likely be short: only about an hour long, giving you ample time to go home and brew your own Kombucha.

You’ve seen Kombucha in the store:

It’s delicious and it’s good for ya, but it’s pretty ‘spensive, huh? Well it’s really easy, really cheap, and really fun to make yourself! It’s about as complex as making iced tea. You can play with your own recipes to make ginger, blueberry, or other delicious mixes.

At the end of the class, you’ll get a kombucha scoby to go home with to start brewing your own Kombucha. Please bring a sealable jar to take your scoby in! It’d be best to bring a mason jar:

A strong ziploc freezer-style bag could work in a pinch.

Please bring US10.5 or US11 knitting needles and a light colored, smooth (i.e. not furry or mohair, but also not shiny or slick) ball of chunky yarn), scissors, and a tapestry or over-sized large eye needle. Always gathered in a sustainable manner, we hope to make wild food a regular, long term part of a more mindful way of eating. Once you start eating wild food, you’ll see it wherever you go. Geocaching has been called the high-tech treasure hunting game. At it’s simplest, the game can be played with one person using a GPS receiver to find hidden items all over the world. Find the container, sign the log book to say you were there, and you’re done.

But there are many facets to the game, many ways to play:

Cache alone or with your family,
Trade for small swag items (always trade up!),
Make, trade, and collect personalized ‘signature items’,
find trackable coins and ‘travel bugs’ and help them achieve their objectives,
Participate in themed events,
Challenge yourself with long hikes, rewarding destinations,
See parts of the city you never knew existed,
Answer puzzles to find subsequent parts of the cache,
Be the first to find a new cache…
etc!

We’ll discuss the many types of GPS devices available for use, and the posibility of geocaching without a GPS if you like a slightly greater challenge. Many people use printouts from the Geocaching.com website to reference when searching, but there’s a big trend towards paperless caching as well. Cellphones, PDAs and mobile applications will be compared in the class. We’ll also go over what should be in a standard geocaching kit, what is a pocket query, and how to find caches along a route when you travel. Finally we’ll discuss good practices and things to know when hiding your own caches for others to find.

Parties That Cook invites you to “Sizzle & Swirl,” an exciting evening of wine tasting paired with a hands-on cooking class. Admission includes wine tasting and pairing with a menu of international appetizers.

Upon arrival, you will be greeted with a nibble and a glass of wine produced by Crushpad Winery. A presentation including explanation of key steps in the wine making process will follow. You’ll enjoy a series of comparative tastings from Crushpad’s library of ultra-premium wines exploring a unique wine-tasting theme that may include the wines of the Russian River Valley or blind tasting Rhone whites, for example.

You’ll then be treated to a lively introductory cooking lesson by the Parties That Cook chefs featuring tips such as the fastest way to dice an onion without a tear. Each team will work on a recipe from the evening’s tapas menu, all while sipping wine and listening to upbeat music.

Business Models on the Back of A Napkin

Business startups usually go through a period when they feel they are not making enough progress.

They need to develop. They need to serve customers. They need to concentrate on the back end. They have to worry about making money.

We all go through the muddle and it helps a lot to talk through what you are doing with people who have done experienced the same split-attention and who know the vocabulary of business.

We get together in groups and draw out our business models on the back of a napkin. We either get clear, or we figure out the questions we must answer!
