How to brew your own Kombucha

Hey everyone! The Kombucha brewing class will be on Thursday August 20th at 7PM. Location is TBD in SF — likely in the Avenues. It’ll likely be short: only about an hour long, giving you ample time to go home and brew your own Kombucha.

You’ve seen Kombucha in the store:

It’s delicious and it’s good for ya, but it’s pretty ‘spensive, huh? Well it’s really easy, really cheap, and really fun to make yourself! It’s about as complex as making iced tea. You can play with your own recipes to make ginger, blueberry, or other delicious mixes.

At the end of the class, you’ll get a kombucha scoby to go home with to start brewing your own Kombucha. Please bring a sealable jar to take your scoby in! It’d be best to bring a mason jar:

A strong ziploc freezer-style bag could work in a pinch.

See you on August 20th!

Poster Design

Posters are a print medium that will fortunately never die. You’ll always see them in streets, in front of theaters, and in video stores (so long as video stores stay open.)

Clever ideas are what make a movie or event poster striking. Whether it’s an inside idea from watching the film or hearing a song, or a clever play on words, these drive people to want to see want to experience the event.

This class hopefully aims to discuss what makes posters creative and visually arresting, as well as take a look at past good an bad examples, to learn how to ultimately achieve what is considered a great poster design, or at least become generally more aware of what goes into it.

Intro to Test-Driven Development

Next time I build a web project from scratch, I’d like to build it so that it’s very maintainable down the road, and from what I read a big part of that is test-driven development.

I have no direct experience following the process, so that’s what I’m looking for—a walk through standard practices and some of the best tools to use.

Basic Knitting, Needling for all

Give me 4 hours and and I will give you the basics that will allow you to use two pointy sticks and twined fibers to create luxury and comfort. You will learn to do cast on, knit, purl, and bind off. Much like a dealer, I’ll give you your first taste of this very addictive pursuit for free. Please bring US10.5 or US11 knitting needles and a light colored, smooth (i.e. not furry or mohair, but also not shiny or slick) ball of chunky yarn), scissors, and a tapestry or over-sized large eye needle. If you have trouble finding these things, they can all be found at Anacapa Fine Yarns, Ventura, CA (anacapafineyarns.com). We will be meeting outside in a gorgeous park and sun protection and a beach chair are recommended, since my canopy is only 9×9 and sitting on the grass for 4 hours can become tiresome.

Intro to Online Paper Prototyping

It seems like everyone’s got an idea for a website nowadays. But if you don’t have any practical skills (i.e. aren’t a designer or developer), it’s hard to know where to start.

Over the course of a few projects, I’ve developed a lightweight process I call ‘online paper prototyping’ which is useful for non-technical/design folks to express their vision in a compelling and actionable manner.

I will show you how to do it using Balsamiq Mockups and Dreamweaver, but anyone who can write basic HTML should be able to figure it out.

As an example, here are the ones I did for this very site.

retro-slicing your way to a zen meal.

You can get these awesome old slicers
(think braun products from the 80’s from which the ipod is derived)

that slice everything super fine.

You can also make a very nice zennish meal (think veganish temple food)
with minimum effort using a slicer.

you think I kid you.

just in case you’re not impressed,
The application is bit confusing though; I’d love a tutorial on the basics along with a demonstration of how to use SketchUp as a tool to design structures that could realistically be built in the real world (off the shelf parts, a focus on limiting complexity).

These are great ways to find like minded people globally but does it satisfy the need for personal connection?
Sycamore is a concept designed to help encourage, build and strengthen relationships on a personal level for people to connect “in person”. It is not a dating service. It is a support for reconnecting, establishing and celebrating relationship.
We offer practical advice, personal encouragement and suggest ways to live simply, to broaden horizons and to build community.

Contact Improv Dance Workshop

Open to all levels of experience, this workshop focuses on the underlying elements of Contact Improvisation. Together we will develop skills such as kinesthetic awareness, breathing into efficient movement, receptive touch, pouring weight and rolling through a point of contact. We will explore partnering from a place of curiosity and compassion for ourselves and for one another.

What is Contact Improvisation (CI)?

Contact Improv is a dance form created in the 1970’s. It stems from various traditions including Aikido, Capoeira, and post-modern dance. Though also used in performance and choreography, a social gathering for CI is called a JAM (in the same way Jazz musicians get together for a musical improvisation jam.) Following points of physical contact (with other dancers or the space) provides the starting point for exploration through movement improvisation. As an art form and a movement practice, Contact Improv offers a holistic approach to how we understand our bodies— how we move, feel, think, create, and interact with one another.

How to gather 'wild food'

Inspired by forageSF, I’d like to know how to identify and ‘harvest’ wild food. They define wild food as:

Wild foraged means uncultivated. These foods have never felt human hands until the day of harvest. Instead of being raised on a farm, these foods grow naturally where they choose, in our local oceans and forests. Always gathered in a sustainable manner, we hope to make wild food a regular, long term part of a more mindful way of eating. Once you start eating wild food, you’ll see it wherever you go. It’s a really amazing thing when you start to realize just how much of what you see every day is edible.

Sounds pretty cool. Maybe we can even get Iso Rabins, the founder of forageSF, to lead the class.

i live in an old house in SF, and if anyone does as well, you’ll understand how cold it can get! I’d rather not run the central heat for 2 reasons:

1. it’s muy expensive!
2. it’s not the healthiest way of heating

i’ve seen heat therapy pillows before that you can easily heat up in the microwave – typically filled with flaxseed or corn – and they stay warm for hours! i would love to learn how to make my own to stay toasty on these chilly san francisco nights and to give away as nice practical gifts!

Rapid Language Learning

My interest in learning languages quickly stems from my belief that traveling is best experienced when one can talk to locals, ask them questions, and share a beer.

This class will focus on how to identify the structures of a language, how to approach studying a language, and address the fastest way to begin speaking in another language.

I am really interested in learning other people’s techniques for learning languages as well. Please bring some good stories, I will provide some beer and wine and get the talk going.

I keep hearing about all these web servers that are not Apache, like lighttpd and Cherokee. Why do people use them? (Presumably performance, but what’s the performance gain and are there other benefits?) How do I set them up? Can I run them on my OS X dev box in addition to Linux? What are the drawbacks to using them?

Geocaching - The many ways to play the 'Sport Where You Are the Search Engine'

Geocaching has been called the high-tech treasure hunting game. At it’s simplest, the game can be played with one person using a GPS receiver to find hidden items all over the world. Find the container, sign the log book to say you were there, and you’re done.

But there are many facets to the game, many ways to play:

Cache alone or with your family,
Trade for small swag items (always trade up!),
Make, trade, and collect personalized ‘signature items’,
find trackable coins and ‘travel bugs’ and help them achieve their objectives,
Participate in themed events,
Challenge yourself with long hikes, rewarding destinations,
See parts of the city you never knew existed,
Answer puzzles to find subsequent parts of the cache,
Be the first to find a new cache…
etc!

We’ll discuss the many types of GPS devices available for use, and the posibility of geocaching without a GPS if you like a slightly greater challenge. Many people use printouts from the Geocaching.com website to reference when searching, but there’s a big trend towards paperless caching as well. Cellphones, PDAs and mobile applications will be compared in the class. We’ll also go over what should be in a standard geocaching kit, what is a pocket query, and how to find caches along a route when you travel. Finally we’ll discuss good practices and things to know when hiding your own caches for others to find.

Join us and learn about this easy, fun, and inexpensive hobby!

In this class we will learn about sustainable guerrilla gardening processes and techniques, including native plant types, where to get suitable plants, and how to go about planning and executing a successful operation. There may even be a hands-on activity of creating “seed bombs” to be used in your local neighborhood.

Urban Survival

As much as we’d all love for everything to be perfect all the time, the truth is sometimes things go wrong, and sometimes in a really big way. If you live in a city, disasters can be compounded by hordes of people running around like jack asses not knowing what to do and expecting city services to be there for them. As we learned in New Orleans, that probably won’t work out so well. In this class we’ll go over a bunch of things that might come in handy and might help you survive in a city in a worst case scenerio.

some things we might cover:
- disaster & survival kits
- escape bags
- escape routes
- first aid
- lock picking
- urban caching
- firearms
- ninjas

Check out Urban Journal for some of the bits and pieces.

Ayurveda and Gourmet Cooking

These classes combine gourmet cooking, and the elegantly simple and grounded approach to nutrition that Ayurveda offers, into a model of sustainable eating. Food that is grown organically and locally, and allowed to ripen on the plant, tastes the best, and has the most “prana” or life force. A wonderful foundation for a delicious, nutritious and sustainably grown meal.

Join Simone de Winter and Koa Pickering to learn about some basic Ayurvedic principles to inform our food choices, and learn about some specialty ways of preparing these foods. We will prepare a tasty meal and taste it too. You will take home many healthy and delicious recipes.

Build a Following, One Tweet at a Time

When Tim Ferriss tweets, 80k+ people listen. “I’m not Tim Ferriss,” you say. But he too started one follower at a time. This conversation will run through the basics of joining the conversation, creating value, building a following, and realizing your goals (traffic, diggs, grandeur etc).

“Twitter and Facebook give knowledge workers the chance to turn downtime into a game where creativity and insight are rewarded, if only with digital pats on the back.” – WIRED

We’ll kick it off with a run through of best practices I’ve seen, but come prepared to share your own experiences. Unclasses = collaborative learning.

We may cover topics like:

how do I start?

why should I care?

but I don’t have time to blog.

what’s worth sharing?

what tools and platforms are out there?

This will be a round table discussion that looks at where aggregation fits in the media ecosystem and how different media companies are using and extracting value from aggregation. This is not a presentation on Blips, but a look at the media landscape and market. Comparisons to how Future is leveraging aggregation will be made, but the primary focus of this discussion is external not internal.

Business Models on the Back of A Napkin

Business startups usually go through a period when they feel they are not making enough progress.

They need to develop. They need to serve customers. They need to concentrate on the back end. They have to worry about making money.

We all go through the muddle and it helps a lot to talk through what you are doing with people who have done experienced the same split-attention and who know the vocabulary of business.

We get together in groups and draw out our business models on the back of a napkin. We either get clear, or we figure out the questions we must answer!

PS I can’t get unclasses to work for the UK. Until then, I suggest you sign up for Spicy Networking on Meetup and we can coordinate through there.
