Practical Photography for Non-Photographers
I’d like to get a step beyond point-and-shoot. I use the autofocus on my small digital camera effectively now to focus shots decently and adjust the lighting half-way decently in tougher lighting conditions, but I’d like to be able to use the adjustments my camera provides to really make the shots look right. Someday I’ll upgrade to more of a photographer’s camera, but for now I’d just like to be able to take decent shots in more conditions with my simple camera.
Teacher's Notes
I’m an avid amateur photographer with experience shooting 35mm SLRs, DSLRs, and point-and-shoots. I also believe the most important piece of equipment in a photographer’s kit is his eye — any camera can take a good picture of the right shot.
I believe the key to most effectively using one’s camera is understanding the fundamentals of photography: aperture, shutter speed, ISO, focal length, and depth of field. And I can explain some practical experiments to demonstrate those principles in tangible terms.
I’m down to meet up with people on a nice day somewhere outdoors that is convenient for those interested.

I would love to learn about this topic, but I won’t be able to make it. Would love to come if it was held another time!
I feel embarrassed as the suggester for the event that I won’t be able to make it—I’m unfortunately moving out of the bay area for the time being this very weekend. Everyone learn a lot for me, and thanks, Jonathan, for volunteering to teach!
Thanks. I think I can make it this Saturday where in Marina Green is the meeting place?
i can’t make this sunday either, but hopefully i’ll be able to come to the next class!
Unfortunately, I won’t be able to make it this Sunday. Hopefully for the next class, though!
I wish I could make it. Would you mind holding this again next month? Have a wonderful time!
(un)classes are generally free unless otherwise specified by the teacher. There is no charge for this class, just bring your camera.
i’m out of town this weekend but i’ll try to join next time!
by the way, doodle is a really helpful tool for scheduling meeting/events and getting input on peoples’ availability… http://www.doodle.com/
Hi Jonathan,
I don’t think I can make it this Sunday as I am away but I will try – otherwise I will try to join in the next time!
Catriona.
How do people feel about 4pm this Sunday August 13 at Marina Green? Please leave a comment if you would like to propose an alternate time.
Looks like we have many new additions to the (un)class…Jonathon, can you propose a time and date to meet up? Looking forward to it!
Hey guys, sorry for taking so long to schedule this. Is anyone interested in meeting up this weekend at Marina Green for a photo walk/(un)class if the weather is nice?
Since there’s only 4 of us at this point, just post your availability in the comments and we’ll figure something out.

Ok, we’re going to meet at 4pm today by the water fountains in the field at the Northwest corner of Baker St & Marina Blvd (near the snack hut). From there, we can try shooting at the marina, the beach, Crissy Field, and the Palace of FIne Arts to try out different subject matters and lighting conditions. Don’t forget to bring your camera, since the class will primarily be you taking photos and learning by doing.
