Basic Piano
This is a 1-hour class for absolute beginner. We will cover the piano keyboard, and foundation technique on how to strike a key. My place can fit up to 10 students. There are piano & keyboard for up to 4 people on a first come first serve basis. Participant no.5 onwards will need to bring their own keyboard, or arrange to share with someone who is bringing one.
Teacher's Notes
Chong Kee has been playing the piano for 30 years. He is classically trained and his repertoire includes concert works by Chopin, Rachmaninov, Liszt, Mozart, etc.

That was a fun lesson. Since you folks asked for another one, I’ve listed another Basic Piano class on Feb 3. And Julia, yes, I can give private lessons, too. Come for the Feb 3 class and we can take it from there :-)
I too have to cancel and I’m so sorry for the last minute update. I hope you all have a great time!
Hello all—as “my luck” would have it, I now have to fly to LA tonight. So, there is at least one more spot open. I’m truly, truly sorry for the late cancellation. It sounds like it’s going to be great.
Chong—any chance you offer private lessons?
Chong – great looking forward to it! I spoke with Mark Ewing (the organizer) over the weekend and he’s not going to be able to make it. Just sharing in case some of the folks further down the list are worried about space — my hunch is that everyone that shows up will be fine as a few folks inevitably won’t make it.
Stoked! See you all this evening.
For tomorrow, when you get to my apartment (across the street from Costco) use the entry system and I’ll buzz you in. Go to 2nd floor using either the lift or stairs, and #207 is at the extreme end of the corridor, through a fire door.
Ok. I got a decent keyboard on craigslist for a good price, so I’ll be bringing it to class tomorrow.
See everyone then!
Jess
8 pm is much better for me! Unfortunately, I couldn’t come up with a keyboard. Will we have enough to share?
Ashley
8pm on the 20th sounds great. Thanks for taking on the class! I don’t know if anyone has access to a keyboard, because I don’t :( But I can comb some thrift stores and see what I can find.
See you next week!
Jessica
Agree that 8PM is better than 8AM. I am still in for Wednesday the 20th.
Folks, in order to help Chong with planning, can you please drop the class if you are not able to come?
Hi Rahmin – Since this is a class for complete beginners, no prior preparation necessary.
Hi Chong, Wed the 20th at 8pm works great for me! Thanks for doing this again. Is there anything we should do to prepare in advance?
best
rahmin
Hi folks, I just realized that I actually put in 8am rather than 8pm. Are all 14 of you OK with 8am? I can actually do it at that time if it is a good time for you. But just in case, I’ve also changed the date and time to 8pm for Jan 13th Wed.
Also, I can fit at most 10 people, and 14 have signed up. That means Mark, Rahmin, Lindsay and Andrea can use my piano and keyboard, and Rick, Mei, Erin, Ashley, Julia and Jessica need to make arrangement to bring 3 keyboards between you. Kelly, Elizaveta, Malashenko and Ben are on waiting list. This is my first time doing anything on unclass, so I’m assuming that people are listed based on when they signed up, and that everyone who is signed up are really committed to come. Did I get all that right?
Please give me some feedback so that we can pull off a good lesson for everyone. Thanks!
Chong Kee
Alright, I’ve firmed up a date and time: January 21st, Thursday 8pm. Please confirm if you can make it.
I am a beginner in it’s truest form. I’ve been known to play the chorus of ‘Heart and Soul’ but that about completes my repertoire. I’m really looking forward to this and in the mean time I’ll ask around about borrowing a keyboard.
Ashley
Sounds like a lot of you are complete beginners. To be sure, are there anyone who is not a complete beginner here? Anyone of you have a keyboard you can bring to your lesson? I have a grand piano and a keyboard. Ideally 2 to a keyboard is manageable for beginners.
I am an absolute beginner as well. I took organ lessons as a small child, but don’t remember a thing! Very excited someone wants to teach us!
Best,
lindsay
Hello Chong—so happy to have a teacher for this class! I took a couple years of lessons as a kid, but should be considered an absolute beginner since I can’t recall any of it. :)
Best,
Julia
Hi Chong – very excited to learn; I am an absolute beginner and know only the most basic music theory concepts from a few meager attempts to learn guitar.
Best,
Rahmin

Chong Kee, that was an excellent lesson and you’re a fantastic teacher—thank you again!
Anyone who missed, I HIGHLY recommend attending his next one…we easily learned an incredible amount in just one hour.
