Learning Illustrator
Class 1: Intro to Illustrator will be at 1pm
Class 2: A deeper exploration of Illustrator will start at 2:30pm
I encourage people to come to both classes to keep a good flow and to avoid any repeated questions. Also, Class 2 will be a natural progression from Class 1, so why not learn more! :)

Yikes! So, we’re definitely not going to be able to fit all 28 people comfortably in the sun room — it’s room enough for 15-20 people — do we have a headcount of people for sure going, or is this just people interested? Are some people just planning on coming to 1 or 2, or is everyone planning on both?
s

Thanks!
Alana
(and thanks Rahmin for the kind advice)
hey jennifer/sha, this class sounds awesome and thanks for all of the planning and coordination so far! either day work well for me and I’m going to try to hit both classes – I’ve fooled around with illustrator in the past but it’s been awhile. stoked!
I could do 2:30/2:45 p.m. on a Saturday (for class #2) with Sundays being flexible.
I could do 2:30/2:45 p.m. on a Saturday (for class #2) with Sundays being flexible.
alright guys – just need some more people to confirm which class they’d like to take.
these are the tentative plans – which i hope to lock in by the end of the week:
Saturday August 29th
Class 1: Intro to Illustrator will be at 1pm
Class 2: A deeper exploration of Illustrator will start at 2:30pm
I encourage people to come to both classes to keep a good flow and to avoid any repeated questions. Also, Class 2 will be a natural progression from Class 1, so why not learn more! :)
Both classes will be held in a sunny office @ 16th and Mission, much thanks to Sha.
Please let me know if these dates & times work for you. We are trying to be flexible and be open Sunday, though Saturday is preferred.
Considering I taught myself to use Illustrator, I feel like I need Class 1, but things at work are changing and I might need to step up my game and take Class 2.
Class 2 but wouldn’t mind brushing up on my fundamentals in Class 1. Can I take both?
-Amie
Alana – you can download a 30 day trial version of Illustrator CS4 for your MAC/PC @ Adobe: http://www.adobe.com/downloads/
Just create an account and start downloading CS4.

CLASS 1: I know almost nothing
Do we need to have a laptop will illustrator loaded on it? That could be problematic. If anyone has a puter to share, I’d be grateful to do that.
Prefer Sunday 8/30
CLASS 1 – I should be able to make it that last weekend of August, depending on the time of day and length of the class. Thanks!
Hey you guys! I’m so glad I’m not the only one a bit lost with Illustrator!
Shall we at least get a date set for the 1st introductory class? How is the last weekend of August – Saturday the 29th, or Sunday the 30th?
Sha, if we can use your sun room, I think that would be perfect.
If everyone can classify themselves under CLASS 1: Getting Comfortable with Illustrator or CLASS 2: A Deeper Exploration of Illustrator – so I can start tallying up people for each class.
You can simply put CLASS 1 or CLASS 2.
Thanks!

i’ve been thinking of a ‘basic’ tutorial as consisting of introducing vectors, getting comfortable with the Pen tool, and layer / masking / grouping familiarization as well as export / publishing. does that seem about right?
for more fringe-type tips and tricks stuff i was thinking about the blend options, custom keyboard shortcuts, swatch / appearance / filter managment, etc? the fringe-type stuff i am familiar with might be very specific to what i use illustrator for [renderings, diagrams, layouts, architectural drawings] but i’m interested in hearing what other people would like to learn about
s
I consider myself more in the group of introduction to get comfortable with” illustrator, but I learn very fast.
I need it more for fashion design freelance projects and new skills to learn.
OL
I use Illustrator at work for designing print ads, so I’m only comfortable with it as a layout tool. I picked it up using my knowledge of Adobe InDesign and Quark XPress. I’d love to learn drawing tools as well as any handy techniques I may have missed. I’m in SF but with a bike, so anything in the city or near a BART station would be best for me.
if we could get a count of how many people describe themselves as “illustrator all day long, but would like to learn tips and tricks and more” and those who would want “an introduction to / to get comfortable with” illustrator, it might be easier to structure / pace / split up [?].
also, if it’s on a weekend our sun room at Stamen [16th and mission] could fit 15-20 people if they’re fine with sitting on couches / etc, although it would be cozy — if anyone else has suggestions i’d love to hear them
s
Im in illustrator all day long as an apparel designer. I just upgraded to CS4 and it would be great to learn some new tricks and short cuts.
good point Sha. i would definitely participate in both sessions if we do that – it would make sense to start with an intro and learning the the basics – then getting into it more in another session.
we obviously need a place that has a decent amount of outlets. can anyone suggest a meeting place for 17 people? i don’t know of many places that can accommodate that many with computers.
I’m a photoshop because I’ve worked with design at school, but illustrator has somehow eluded me. I’m in Oakland but can go anywhere!
seems like we have people wanting basics of illustrator / getting comfortable as well as people who are looking for a deeper exploration, does it make sense us to do two different sessions?
staying in sf would make a lot of things easier though, and if needed i can bring a projector :)
s
I’m in the SF East Bay and would love to have it over here in oakland. If there are any others from east bay, maybe we can work out 2 classes. Have an idea for a location.
I’m great with photoshop except the vector stuff; I understand illustrator is all vectors. I’m scared! :-D
Hi I used it very little on my last job and I really need it.
I’ll be there for sure!
O
awesome you guys! Amie & Sha – i’m sure between you guys everything will be covered. hopefully we’ll get a few more people in, then i’ll come up with a date and meeting place.
thank you!
My experience with Illustrator is solely a product of playing around, and trying to get it to fit my immediate needs. I’d love to learn more about it’s capabilities!
I’m in illustrator all day long as a textile designer. I know how to use the program for my needs but am always down to learn new tricks from fancy folks. I just upgraded to CS4 so if Sha can cover some of the new features of that version that would be great!
-A
i used to do basic illustrator sessions when i was graphics manager at a magazine in berkeley, if we get a few more people who want to learn, we can agree on a good time / place in the city to meet!
