Web 2.0 and Social Media 102

So you’re on Facebook and you tweet here and there. Maybe you have joined a group, become a fan, or joined a cause.

What I want to learn about is how to better use Twitter, Facebook, Flickr, etc. for outreach and marketing for non-profits and other small businesses.

I am willing to help host and facilitate this unclass. I will wait to see who signs up.

Teacher's Notes

I organized this class because I wanted to get a group of people together to talk about social media and how to use some of the most popular tools, apps, and sites out there. Now I am using social networking sites to organize it. Whoa! That is metta. Anyhow, I don’t know everything, but I have some experience on these apps and I think I can facilitate a nice conversation.

I recently created a Fanpage and a Twitter account for my after school program. Last year brought Flickr to my organization and now everyone uploads photos to it. In the next year I will be helping my organization establish its presence on Facebook.

We talked a lot about FB Fan Page Management tools. Seesmic just launched pretty robust support so it looks like it is now a viable alternative to TweetDeck for FanPage management.

Thank you Aaron for putting together the class and allowing us into your office space.

I actually got a lot of really cool practical tips/tricks and ideas about what apps to use.

Very interested in doing it again in a month or so and coming back with some thoughts after playing with my new list of 10 things to do.

Cheers,

Nate

Is this Class at 16th St (original post) or Steiner (Aaron’s update). Assuming Steiner and trying to make it there after work.

In thinking about tonight’s meeting I think it would be helpful if all of you think about these following questions?

1. What are some good examples from the web? (good Fanpages, Blogs, Tweeter, etc.) We will look at these to learn from them.
2. What are your favorite web apps/tools to manage or unify social networking sites? How do you use them?
3. What do you want to be able to do with your social networking sites but you don’t know how to do it at this time?

My goals for the meeting:
- learn how to use specific web tools/apps to help manage and unify social networking sites
- look to the “best” of the web for examples of what is possible

Please feel free to post more of your own questions. We will discuss meeting goals and questions at the meeting.

Finally, I will have a laptop and an projector available at the meeting. We will definitely look at the sites and applications we are talking about.

Good idea Aaron…here are a couple of questions to get things started:

1. What is the current state of social media (prevalent uses, best practices, etc.)?

2. How to use social media to maximize “viral” marketing

3. How to quickly and easily stay on top of and current with all the different social media outlets (e.g. managing it all, getting and staying organized, time management, etc.)

Thanks—looking forward to it!

I would be great if folks could start posting some specific questions they want to explore for the evening. Remember I am only a facilitator. I am not an expert.

I am realizing that the number of people registered for this class is pretty large. I would like to propose that we change the venue to my office at 16th and Mission. 3040 16th St. I will provide a projector which I think will be useful for get down to the nitty gritty of how we are using Web 2.0.

I am proposing three dates for the Web 2.0 and Social Media UnClass. Please use the meeting Doodle to help pick the date. http://doodle.com/ygcdgf2wbr7sfsqp

This class could work well as a discussion / sharing of individual best practices. Let’s see if we can round up a group.
