Intro to Straight Razor Shaving and Lathering

I’m still very new to old-fashion straight razor shaving but everyone I talked to at my last unclass said I had to add this to the list.

I’d be teaching how to use a badger shaving brush to create real shaving lather, how to prep for a shave, and how to actually shave with a straight. I’ll share how I got into straights recently, and where to go to learn more and purchase equipment.

Great that you all could make it last night.

As you guys asked, these are what I was using for shaving:
- Wapienica Razor
- Ever-Ready Pure Badger Brush
- Old Crow antique leather strop
- Jack Black Face Buff before lathering up
- Mama Bear’s Sandalwood Vanilla shaving soap
- Humphrey’s Witchhazel right after shaving
- Baxter of California After Shave Balm

Happy Shaving!

I can host mon 10/26 at 6:30pm.
I need to know how many people are coming because space is not unlimited :).
Should we each bring a model if we can find a brave soul?
Better get online to order some things quick, eh?
Dave, could you call to talk over arrangements if we meet here? Thanks!

Can anyone host this class tomorrow? Been super busy last several days, and haven’t found a place for tomorrow afternoon.

If not, we’ll reschedule till next week…

Sadly, I’ll be out of town this Monday 10/19.
Before 3pm on the 26th (or November) could work.
Otherwise, sad to miss it!

Hello Everybody!

So, if people are still interested, we should be on for this coming Monday – October 19th. No equipment or supplies are necessary to come down, but if you’re dying to get a jumpstart on shaving – there are a few things you will need:
– A Razor – You can go two directions on this: traditional straight razor or a “disposable” straight razor, also called a “Shavette”.
– A Leather Strop (if buying traditional) – the Filly strop available at Ruprazor.com would make a great first strop.
– Disposable DE Razors (if buying a shavette) – I’d go for a “sample pack” of different DE blades
– A Shaving Brush – I’d look for a badger-haired brush labeled as “Pure Badger”.

Nicole…If you’re still open to it, would you be willing to host?! If not, I’ll call around to salon’s in San Francisco.

Hey everybody.

I’ve posted a poll at http://doodle.com/633t85ipn6mzgu29
Let us know what the best days and times are that work for you. I’m getting in some extra equipment just to show people, but you don’t need to bring anything or purchase any tools.
Nicole, if you’re looking to get started right away, drop me a note and I can pass you along some links to equipment to buy.

Hello!
Well, while I am unfortunately not in a salon that has hair/shaving equipment around, I would still love to make this class reality!
My space is a live/work loft with a skincare studio set up in it, in the Mission/Potrero area of SF.
I have a hot towel cabinet and regular sink available if that is useful?
Anytime on a Monday would be the ideal time for me!
Dave, will you let us know if you are providing supplies, what the fee would be for them, or else a list of what we’ll need and where to get it?
Thanks!!
Nicole

Hey guys and gals,

So it’s time we make this happen. What days work best for people? Would anyone be willing to host the event? I’m in the East Bay and that makes it harder for people to get there.

Nicole – if you’re working at a salon now, would you be willing to host? All we’d really need is access to a sink, hot water, and a big mirror…Sounds like a salon might fit that bill. I had some ideas about ways of doing it professionally too…

i wanted to learn this to do professionally as part of men’s skincare facial treatment but looks from the board of barbering and cosmo CA that I’d have to do an entire barbering certification to do so. love to hear any info you have on this, and to learn from you regardless!

Doug, Check around at antique stores for older razors…I’ve found some at places around the east bay. If you’re looking for a new safety razor, definitely hit up Amazon for anything by a brand called “Merkur”.
www.straightrazordesigns.com is also a great site for straights.

Mark, Someone must know how to webcast it up…

here’s what I got via aardvark:

“If you aren’t in a hurry, eBay is usually good for old straight razors – best deal for old-style safety razors is Vermont Country Store http://www.vermontcountrystore.com/browse/Home/Apothecary/Mens-Grooming/Double-Edged-Razor/D/30103/P/1:100:1000:10140/I/f00029?evar3=SEARCH … for something currently manufactured, but vintage in style, try Caswell-massey http://www.caswellmassey.com/search/default.aspx?Keywords=razor&perpage=12&match=AND

Anyone know a good place to buy older safety and/or straight razors?
