Basic Video Editing / Intro to Documentary Film-making

I’ve fooled around with FinalCut a bit in the past but never established any killer workflows or best practices.

Today, I’m more likely to capture video using my Canon point-and-shoot camera. I’d love to learn more about how to do things like:

1.) Easily splice segments together w/ transitions and add a soundtrack
2.) Compress the video for web consumption
3.) How to take better footage, especially in an documentary or interview style

I’m sure there is more I’d like to know as well and would look forward to having someone more proficient lead the way!

Teacher's Notes

I’m not an expert by any means, but I am self taught. I just recently got back from traveling through fifty states and filmed a documentary on the economy and the recession with my brother. My brother is definitely the master, but not much of a public teacher dude.

I definitely know how to use Final Cut Pro, and can guide you with the basic film fundamentals, they may or may not teach you in film school.

I am bummed that I missed this class. I still have video production needs. I am wondering if any of you would like to volunteer to make a 4 minute YouTube video for my program. I want to make a promotional video to get students excited about my outdoor after school program. We have lots of photos and some video footage of students camping, backpacking, hiking, kayaking, rafting, etc. We have one video that is really good, but it needs to be redone to make it a promotional video. Would this interest any of you?

Ken:

For sure, it doesn’t matter what program you’re using. It’s about building a story line, and using simple and clean techniques to depict what emotion or story you want to evoke or convey.

I can cover all those topics tonight as well. Bring your project, and I can give you some ideas! Thanks for coming!

Everyone else:

This will be a very hands on class as well. I plan on throwing a few of you on the computer so get ready to edit!

Note: Bring your computer if you want, but it’s not necessary.

email me if you have any questions before tonight. austin.chu at gmail

Hey Austin,

I am doing corporate video which probably has some similarities with documentary editing.

Overall my goal is to turn what would otherwise be boring corporate video into compelling and engaging content.

I like the quick edits in your shorts leveraging lots of b roll.

Since I am using Pinnacle 12 on a PC (uncool I know), I am most interested in technique versus the specifics in any one editing suite.

Specifically I would like to know:

  • When hand how to assemble a set of quick cuts
  • When to use transition elements like fades, etc.
  • Best practices for music
  • Best practices for titles
  • Best lengths and story structures for short subjects
  • Other techniques to really grab the audience

Thanks again for agreeing to teach the course. Ken

Folks, this class is on for TOMORROW 7/730PM at 1035 page st in the Haight, SF. Bring footage to edit if you can! If not, don’t worry, there will still be lots to dig into and learn.

If you haven’t checked out Austin’s site for his forthcoming documentary, click here: http://therecessends.com/

Hey, we’re about 2 weeks away from this class. Just wanted to get some background and see what everyone wanted to learn. This is what I’m thinking.

Bring something you’ve shot, or you’ve wanted to get edited. Hopefully, at the end of the class, each of you, will have a video that rocks.

Ideas: Interview your neighbor, a dog owner, the cool dude down the street, an event, etc.

I can no longer make the Aug 25th date. Bummer. If you all decide to change it let me know.
