FULL: Ruby-on-Rails for Programming Neophytes
I want to learn how to build a functioning alpha prototype of a simple web service. Backend coding (RoR) and simple front-end impementation of design (CSS/XHTML).
After the class we’ll be able to:
- Create functional prototypes
- Build a basic front-end (CSS/XHTML)

Teacher's Notes
I’m a senior engineer working at Involver. I’ve been working with Ruby on Rails for almost 2 years now, and I have to say, I love it (and hopefully you will too).
My goal is to use this class as an opportunity to show others how easy it is to create useful apps in a short period of time.
Additionally, I look forward to meeting fellow motivated peers in the city.

Per request, here is a zip file of the final version of the twitter project we worked on:
http://daretorant.com/nubular/nubular.zip
It includes the retweet functionality i mentioned, so if you are viewing your twitter feed via http://localhost:3000/twitter_feeds/1 you can click retweet on a bunch of the tweets. Then, you can view the RSS feed of those retweets at http://localhost:3000/re_tweets.rss (that hits the re_tweets controller, index action, rss format, index.rss.builder view).
Also, here’s the very tiny PDF i threw together for the class:

Hope you all enjoyed the class… was fun for me :)
IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS:
- This class is best suited for Mac OSX Leopard users, simply because getting rails installed on that platform is the easiest, and it’s almost impossible for me to target every platform in the installation guide. NOTE: The lesson itself is applicable to any platform, but following along will require a working installation.
- BEFORE YOU ATTEND THIS CLASS, you need to follow these simple steps: http://pastie.org/private/rxzgheth5ks5dtqttnwa. It should not take more than 5-10 minutes.
If you have any questions, or issues with the setup, please send me an email at salman@involver.com and I will try to advise as best I can. Also, I will be coming in a bit early (around 1:30PM) to the class to set up, so if you wanna drop in early I can try and help get you set up.
See you all tomorrow afternoon!
I checked the projector to make sure we have all the cords etc. as well as projector screen. We are all set for Sunday class!
Hey Nip,
The time is set for 2PM on Sunday, May 3rd. It will be held at Citizen Space which is located at 425 2nd St, San Francisco.
I was aiming to make this class more of a workshop rather than a lecture, so that people can actually try to follow along. As such, I expect it to be somewhere between 1.5-2 hours.
Look forward to seeing you there!
Hey Salman,
Looking fwd to this class; thanks for doing it.
Do we have a time set for Sunday?
How long do you expect we’ll be at it?
Okay people, we have a space! Big thanks to Olya Lapina, who has gotten us a space at citizen space. The location is right off 2nd and Harrison, i’ve updated the class with the
We’re working on booking the room, and will update the class once it’s finalized.
In the meanwhile, I am interested in knowing what people are looking to gain out of this class. If you have anything specific in mind that isn’t already part of the class
Where is this class going to be held? And Rahmin, looking forward to meeting you. I was going to teach that Basic Black & White darkroom techniques class but there wasn’t enough interest. More than willing to chat with you about it after this class tho
i already bought my tickets, and they’re nonrefundable. :-( i’ll try to trade that film night with someone else though!
For SFIF — it runs from April 24th to May 8th, so I would think there’s a good chance you’d be able to catch any of the movies during this period on another day, no?
testing a new feature out on y’all – comments should now send class members a notification email…
Wow! Awesome… great to see so much interest. If people have specific goals for what they want to learn from this class — feel free to email me at salman@involver.com and i’ll try to incorporate it into the class.
I’ve set the date for Sunday, May 3r
@daretorant, the class is filling up, have a date in mind? I can line up a classroom of some sort.

Hi All,
Just a quick update from your Rails class teacher (me): Rahmin from unclasses generously donated $50 in Kiva credits for teaching this class. I just donated $25 each to a cause in Phillipines for a recently married woman running her own store, and a cause in Pakistan for a group of housewives who are starting their own businesses. If you’ve never heard of Kiva, check it out at http://kiva.org. It’s worth your time (and your money).
Thanks Rahmin, and rock on unclasses!
P.S. If you want to donate to the same causes I did, check them out here and here.
