Designing Products for Real People
Learn how to put the user at the center of your product design cycle and build things that people love.
We’ll have a design session about Unclasses itself (as a product)…
- We’ll do some quick user research about Unclasses (maybe recruit a few people from Craigslist to come in for interviews)
- We’ll use a variety of user research methodologies
- Based on our learnings from the user research, we’ll go through a design process to solve the major problems
- Then we’ll talk about how we might act on the design process.
Teacher's Notes
I work on the design of Aardvark (vark.com)
Happy to teach whenever — weekends are probably best!

Rob, Rahmin,
Great event yesterday— thank you for coordinating.
Would you mind sharing some of the materials (redacted form of the PPT) with us? Happy to coordinate privately if you don’t want to post publicly.
Also I’d be interested in an example of your “gigs” postings on Craigslist that were generating 200 leads, or just point me to a real one since “aardvark” and “vark” weren’t in the search results. :-)
Finally, any books or papers you have off the top of your head (you mentioned some work at Stanford) for “further reading” would be awesome.
Regardless, thanks for donating your time and delivering a great class.
Based on the poll, we’ve scheduled the class for tomorrow at 4pm @ 138 10th Street in San Francisco. Looking forward to seeing everyone there. if you need to get ahold of us for any reason, just drop me an email rahmin@unclasses.org ##

Check out Rahmin’s last comment for a vote on when to hold the class. Hopefully most of you can make it.
Hi Guys, I spoke with Rob and we’re gunning to hold this class either this Sunday OR next Sunday. Please fill out this simple poll to let us know what time works best for you.

Thanks!

alrighty, this is your friendly unclass ambassador checking in. rob, do you have any availability in the coming weeks? let’s get this on the books!
Rob,
You could use the boardroom but I’d have to be able to be there. :-( My weekends are booked through June 26th unfortunately, so I can’t make this Sunday. No need to reschedule on my account, but given that I’m subletting I need to be around if there’s others at my office; sorry. If you do it in the evening, still happy to do it at my place.
sorry for the delay here guys… how about next Sunday, June 7? Andrew, any chance we could use that boardroom?
Sunday should work for me.
do we have a location? I have a large 12-person boardroom (that fits 25+) but only a mobile whiteboard on easel (if that works). Projector available too.
Sunday the 17th is way better than 5/16 on my end…
could also do 8pm this Wednesday
Seems like there are enough people to get started with this…
what dates work best for people?
Maybe next week some time (the week of the 10th), at around 8pm? wednesday?
or Saturday may 16?
hey rob,
could you teach the class this weekend? would love to learn more about your approach to split testing / cohort analysis…

Hey guys,
Thanks so much for coming to the class on Sunday! I had an awesome time — hope you all enjoyed it, too.
Here’s a link to a blog post I wrote with most of the details from the PPT deck: http://blog.vark.com/?p=49 …and here’s a link to a writeup from a talk I gave where I used that slideshow: http://bradlauster.com/archives/589
…also check out this Craigslist Posting that we use to recruit user-testers (in the “ETC” section of the jobs listings): http://sfbay.craigslist.org/sfc/etc/1333528882.html
… and as far as books I mentioned, these are pretty awesome: “The Media Equation” — “The Inmates are running the asylum” — “the design of everyday things”
